• Elected Fellow of The Institute of Mathematical Statistics, May 2002

During the annual international conference of the Institute, held in June 2002 at Banff, Alberta, Mukhopadhyay was awarded a plaque. The citation read, "Nitis Mukhopadhyay, University of Connecticut. For outstanding contribution in sequential analysis and multistage sampling; pathbreaking research in selection and ranking; authoritative books; exemplary editorial service; innovative teaching and advising; and exceptional dedication to preserve and celebrate statistical history through films and scientific interviews."

• Elected Fellow of The American Statistical Association, August 2003

During the Joint Statistical Meetings and the 163rd Annual Meeting of the American Statistical Association, held in August 2003 at San Francisco, California, Mukhopadhyay was awarded a plaque. The citation read, "Nitis Mukhopadhyay, Professor of Statistics, University of Connecticut. For outstanding research contributions in sequential analysis, multistage sampling, selection and ranking; for exemplary editorial work and excellence in teaching and student advising; and for exceptional service in preserving the history of statistics."
